A new school year means new schedules, new classes, and most important, a few new faces around the halls of Ramaz. While students made the most of their free time at camp, at internships or simply at home, the Ramaz administration had little time to rest. Behind the scenes, they spent their summers in the office emailing, interviewing and selecting teachers to help create an engaging and educational school year. With nine new teachers and staff members joining Ramaz this fall – four of them who already know the building -Ramaz is welcoming a mix of familiar faces and new perspectives to the community.
First, Moreh Miri Aharoni is joining the Hebrew Department. Originally from Spain, Moreh Miri is ready to bring her experience and passion for teaching to the Ramaz community this year. Outside the classroom, Moreh Miri enjoys cooking, hiking, and practicing yoga. With her international background and diverse interests, we look forward to all she will bring to the Hebrew Department this year.
Ms. Yaffa Kornsgold is back for round two after graduating from Ramaz herself not too long ago, joining the Learning Center. A commuter, Ms. Kornsgold makes the journey from New Jersey to return to the halls of her alma mater. This Ramaz graduate is thrilled to rekindle her love for writing by getting involved with Parallax, and writing clubs in general! As a student, “Learning Center was a big help,” and Ms. Kornsgold has stated that she is, “excited to return the favor, and pass it forward to the next generation of students.” When she’s not helping out in the Learning Center, you can find her curled up with a good book, spending time with friends, taking a casual nap, or trying out a new baking recipe.
Another familiar face joining is Rabbi Fink, who will be joining the Student Activities Department, all the way from the Ramaz Middle School! Outside of school. Rabbi Fink loves to play piano, guitar, and ultimate Frisbee! From his time at the middle school, Rabbi Fink observed that “Middle school students are a lot more energetic, and I hope that I will be able to take that energy and bring it here”. Rabbi Fink has stated that he is excited to “create a fun, energetic atmosphere”. With years of Ramaz experience and a passion for student engagement, Rabbi Fink is more than ready to bring his energy to the Upper School!
Our next addition is Ms. Gabby Oberlander, who will be teaching Tanakh and Talmud classes this year. While Ms. Oberlander is more than ready to step into the classroom this year, teaching wasn’t always the path she envisioned for herself. In fact, she was originally enrolled in pre-med in the Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University, but in her sophomore year, she discovered her love for Jewish Studies. “There were a lot of students there who weren’t religious, in fact, for many of them it was their first time learning Judaics. So, I would always help them in those classes, and through that, I realized I really loved it, and I wanted to teach Judaics full time,” she explained. Through her classes, Ms. Oberlander hopes that students will “realize that Torah is relevant in our day to day lives. I want them to know that they can enjoy learning Torah, and it is meaningful and will help us in real life.”
Señora Virginia Anze is joining the Spanish Department. Not only does she have teaching experience from both Argentina and New York, but she also has a serious interest in wine culture, and is a certified Pilates instructor! Senora Anze will definitely be able to bring plenty of experience, passion, and a few unexpected talents into the new school year.
Mr. Theodore Canter is here to teach both English and Arabic this year. His father graduated from Ramaz himself in 1984. With international experience and multilingual abilities Mr. Canter is excited to be here..
Rabbi Rosensweig is joining both the Tech and Judaic Departments. Rabbi Rosensweig, who commutes from Queens, said he is looking forward to, “getting to know each student and accomplishing some meaningful learning in class.” Rabbi Rosensweig has a wealth of experience working with students, both in and outside of the classroom.
Mr.Hannah Schachter, who will be teaching 10th-grade Jewish Law and Thought. She hopes to bring her excitement and enthusiasm for Torah learning into her classroom, and share this passion with others. When Ms. Schachter is not in the classroom, she channels that same energy into tennis, running, traveling, and “eating anything chocolate”.
Ms. Bonnie Shine has returned to the Math Department. Ms. Shine has always loved math, inspiring her passion for the subject from an early age. While her favorite units in math – calculus and trigonometry – can be taught almost anywhere, the students are what truly brought Ms. Shine back. Through her classes, she hopes her students “develop a true enjoyment of math, and feel the satisfaction of working through a difficult question and understanding it.” With her passion for math and love for her students, Ms. Shine is eager to be back at Ramaz and ready to mak
e her return a memorable one.
